County Convene is an event that is open to the communities of Ellis County, including in the towns of Midlothian, Waxahachie, Ennis, Red Oak, Ovilla, and Venus. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss topics relevant to the communities of Ellis County, including events, community initiatives, and issues. At the most recent County Convene event, Unite Ellis gave a presentation on a grassroots strategy to help identify the needs of individuals and families throughout Ellis County and connect those in need to those who have the resources to help meet these needs.
At Assisting Hands Home Care, we are committed to meeting the needs of seniors and adults in the communities of Ellis County who could benefit from professional home care. We attended this County Convene meeting to learn more about how we can help meet the needs of those in our community beyond providing home care.
Strategy from Unite Ellis
In order to better understand and serve the needs of the Ellis County communities, the county was divided into 10 geographical zones. Each zone has an established network team made up of representatives from 5 sectors: faith, non-profits, education, business, and government. The goal of having representatives from all five of these sectors within each zone is to allow members of each sector to connect and work with each other to bring about changes that meet the needs of our communities. The areas of need that these network teams will focus on include food insecurity, mental health, housing and homelessness, and other needs that may arise.
The goal of this strategy is to encourage organizations within the five sectors to come together and pool their resources to help individuals and families of various needs throughout Ellis County. Depending on specific needs, network teams will offer help in the form of financial support or services to meet these needs and resolve issues. Some of the resources that have been set up to help those in need include the following:
- CarePortal: CarePortal is a software solution that connects individuals and families in crisis situations who have basic needs with volunteers who sign up to help meet these needs. When someone enters a need into the system, those who are signed up to help receive an email and can respond to the requests to fulfill the need. Those who have entered requests for needs into CarePortal include children and students, single mothers, grandparents raising grandchildren, domestic violence victims, and those who are homeless or in transitional housing. Basic needs that have been met through this portal include supplies like bedding and furniture, clothing, home and vehicle repairs, rent and bill assistance, baby supplies, and groceries.
- CharityTracker: CharityTracker is a client database that allows non-profits to share information between agencies so that non-profits and social services can work together to ensure that individuals and families get the help they need across agencies.
- Communications: Unite Ellis has a new website and podcast to help inform the community about upcoming events and programs. They also developed the Commissioned app which allows organizations and individuals to request to join network groups and provides a platform for the network groups to communicate with each other.
Helping Ellis County Communities with Home Care
At Assisting Hands Home Care, we are inspired by this effort from Unite Ellis to address the needs that many individuals and families in crisis throughout Ellis County face every day. When businesses, organizations, and individuals across sectors come together to combine their resources and work in unison to identify and address the most pressing needs of our communities, great strides can be taken to resolve these issues.
Assisting Hands Home Care has always been dedicated to serving our communities by allowing seniors and adults with disabilities who need care to receive quality in-home care from our professional caregivers so they can continue living safely at home. After attending this County Convene event, we will also be looking into other ways we can contribute to help meet the needs of our local communities.
